How much do media portrayals of certain industries and jobs affect what people choose to do for a living?

Think of journalism and what springs to mind is probably a combination of Drop The Dead Donkey, Anchorman and NewsRadio; most people probably think that politics is a cross between Yes, Minister and The Thick Of It; and Soldier Soldier no doubt set the public perception of what being in the forces is like.
