£1.5m compensation for NHS blunder
A teenager who became blind after a hospital failed to spot a brain tumour has been awarded £1.5 million in damages.
Tatum Rock lost 98% of her vision as a result of the blunder by a radiologist at King George Hospital, Ilford.
James Badenoch QC told London's High Court that a proper reading of the x-ray would have meant only "very slight" repercussions for the girl.
But the obvious signs of raised pressure in her head caused by the benign tumour were missed and Tatum, who had been admitted after striking her head in a fall, was discharged.
A crisis four months later led to her admission to The Royal London Hospital, where doctors discovered the damage to her sight was irrevocable.
Tatum, who was described by Mr Badenoch as a "remarkable young lady", took the action against Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust.
Mr Badenoch told Mr Justice Cooke that the 16-year-old, of Edenbridge, Kent, had great determination and strength of character, and was expected to go on to university after she had left the Royal National Institute of Blind People school in Worcester.
Matthew Jackson, for the Trust, said how sorry it was for the mistake and the disastrous consequences which followed, and hoped that the settlement would enable Tatum to make the most of her life.
Approving the agreed award, which will go into a trust, the judge said: "I wish Tatum all the best for the future which will undoubtedly be very successful."
