Tests are being carried out to find out if a five-year-old boy died of swine flu

A five-year-old boy who died last weekend had contracted swine flu, tests have revealed.

Further tests have been ordered to find out whether the boy, from Olney, Buckinghamshire, died of the H1N1 virus or another health condition.

Dr Diane Gray, deputy director of public health at NHS Milton Keynes, said: "This is a very sad event and until we know why this boy died it would be wise not to speculate as to the cause.

"It is important to remember that swine flu is widespread in communities across the country.

"For most it has proven a relatively mild illness but sadly, similar to seasonal flu, for the few it has been much more serious."

The boy's school was shut on Monday following his death the previous day at Milton Keynes Hospital.

Emerton School, near Olney, reopened on Tuesday with a special assembly held in his memory.
