Nurse stole patient's money
A nurse has been struck off after stealing thousands of pounds from a patient in his care with serious mental health problems.
Adrian Mauger, 46, stole more than £7,000 from the patient's National Savings account, making 25 withdrawals of money between March 2005 and January 2008.
The patient, referred to as Mr. A, was a resident at Portland Care Homes in Derby, where Mauger worked as a mental health nurse.
He had serious mental health problems and learning disabilities and was dependent on Mauger to manage his financial affairs.
Mauger pleaded guilty to five charges of theft and two charges of fraud by abuse of position at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court on June 17, 2008 and was sentenced at Derby Crown Court to nine months in prison.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council decided he should be struck off at a hearing at Aldwych, London.
The panel considering Mauger's case said it agreed with comments made by the sentencing judge that the offence was so "mean" that only an immediate prison sentence could follow; that Mr. A was wholly dependant upon Mauger to manage his financial affairs and that others trusted him to do so.
The panel described Mauger's actions as "terrible breaches of trust" which impaired his fitness to practise.
Mauger did not attend the hearing.
