Masculine mode

Loose boyfit braces jean, £25, ASOS

Maxed out on feminine frocks and florals this summer? Lose your girly streak sharpish in this season's mannish fashions. From oversized shirts to trouser braces and brogues, whether you want to go the whole hog in mannish get-up or simply put a boyish spin on your style, you can pull off the look with a few key pieces.

Marc Jacobs showcased mannish pleat fronted trousers and buttoned-up white shirts at his spring/summer shows, while Stella McCartney favoured a masculine edge with slouchy trousers and knits.

"Mannish is the watchword of the season, especially in tailoring," says Charlotte Moore, InStyle magazine's deputy editor.

"Slouchy trousers and oversized knits are key items to create the look, but you can preserve your feminine allure by adding soft touches such as skin-exposing v-necks and rolled-up sleeves, and stopping one button short of prudish on your cotton shirt."

You don't have to be a tomboy to take on the mannish trend especially if you employ those feminine wiles.
