Is your child calling for a greener future?

Is your child calling for a greener future? We all know the warnings about climate change - and it seems our children do, too. Parents are being given a wake-up call by their children, who want a voice on green issues and a chance to influence environmental policy.

New research shows that half (49 per cent) of young people think they could make a real difference if they were allowed to voice their views. Thanks to Generation Green, British Gas’s schools programme, now they can...

- Get your child involved today

The first-ever green think tank for seven to 14 year olds was launched on 24th April. Nominations are now open across the UK to find 20 green-minded children eager to have the opportunity to take part in the think tank, Our Planet, Our Say - giving them the opportunity to put forward their green ideas to politicians, teachers and the wider community.

Children

Do you know a child who would jump at the chance to take part?
The launch by schools programme Generation Green is a response to anxiety amongst eight out of 10 UK children that adults are not doing enough to protect the environment.

The think tank will be made up of 20 carefully chosen members who will meet during 2009 in three different, inspiring locations that most people never get the chance to see.

Think tank members will be able to ask environmental experts - including Julia Hailes, author of the Green Consumer Guide - about the green conundrums they've been asking you the answers to.

Here's how it works:
· Julia Hailes and other experts will help the team understand how together we can change the world. · The team will then decide what they want to change, and how they would make these changes happen. · At the end of the year, the think tank members get the chance to have their voices heard, as they will take their three point plan for change straight to the Houses of Parliament.

It seems that our children feel the responsibility to tackle green issues, and increasing pressure to educate their parents at home - for example, teaching their family to turn off lights when not in use, and insisting on recycling in the home.

Here's how your child can get involved:
Schoolchildren aged between 7 and 14 can nominate themselves, or be nominated by friends, parents, teachers or any adult at www.generationgreen.co.uk from Friday 24th April.

To enter requires just 100 words explaining why they deserve to be part of Generation Green: Our Planet, Our Say.

Entries will be selected by Julia Hailes and the Generation Green expert judging panel. Successful nominations will be contacted in May.

Generation Green is British Gas’s nationwide schools programme designed to empower teachers, schools and their local communities to tackle climate change through greener behaviour.

It has already attracted over 9,300 schools to sign up and get involved since its launch.
